In 2014 BIC began an assessment to evaluate a number of technologies that could convert biomass (corn stover and wheat straw) into sugars for producing bio products such as biochemical and biofuels, with the goal of trying to determine what might be the best technology for the Sarnia-Lambton region. Ultimately, BIC recommended that CSPC work with Comet to develop a commercial cellulosic dextrose facility. Follow on work, led by BIC, developed a business plan for the venture and assisted CSPC to recruit producers as members of the co-op.  CSPC is now actively collaborating with Comet to establish a sustainable agricultural biomass supply chain and commercialize cellulosic sugars and co-products conversion technology.

BIC is a business accelerator who has worked closely with CSPC and other partners to develop the biomass to sugar value chain.

Bioindustrial Innovation Canada (BIC) is a not-for-profit organization based in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. BIC's mission is to provide critical strategic investment, advice and services to business developers of clean, green and sustainable technologies. Our expertise in commercialization builds a stronger Canada.

CSPC has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Comet Bio to collaborate on the development of a sustainable agricultural biomass supply chain in Southwestern Ontario.

Comet's experienced management team and supply network is working with downstream partners, licensees and JV partners to develop Comet's cellulosic sugar facilities at industrial scale for specific biomass feedstocks and end use applications.

Comet Bio recently announced Sarnia, Ontario as the location of its commercial-scale biomass-derived sugar facility. The plant will require over 60,000 tonnes of corn stover or wheat straw per year producing dextrose sugar. The production of these sugars and co-products would support the production of bioproducts such as biochemicals and biofuels.

Agris Co-operative provided the initial $25,000 loan to support the set up and launch of The Cellulosic Sugar Producers Co-operative.
